New energy law proclaimed

27 Jan 2014

The new law opened up the electricity generation and distribution sector to private investors for the first time. Before, the government-owned Ethiopia Electric Power Corporation (EEPCO) was solely in charge of power generation, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity throughout the country. The new law allows private power companies interested in investing in the energy sector to compete with EEPCO. The newly established Ethiopian Electric Agency (EEA) will supervise private investments in the energy sector and is expected to set prices for the private and state power distributors.
