Permits foreign lawyers and law firms to practice in India

13 Mar 2023

On 13 March 2023, the Bar Council of India issued the “Bar Council of India Rules for Registration and Regulation of Foreign Lawyers and Foreign Law Firms in India, 2022”. Under these rules, foreign lawyers and law firms are permitted to engage in practising foreign law, addressing various international legal matters, and participating in international arbitration within India, following the principle of reciprocity. Although they are not allowed to represent clients in court, foreign lawyers and firms have the opportunity to establish offices in India and provide services related to transactions and corporate matters.
