Introduces a new prohibition on the provision of legal advisory services under the sanctions regime

30 Jun 2023

On 30 June 2023, the Government of the United Kingdom has introduced a new prohibition on the provision of legal advisory services where the legal advisory services are provided in relation to certain financial or trade activities that would be banned under the Russia (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 if that activity were carried out by a United Kingdom person, or in the United Kingdom. This prohibition applies to non-contentious legal advisory services but excludes legal representation services. The ban encompasses both in-house counsel and lawyers in private practice within United Kingdom sanctions jurisdiction. In addition, the definition of "non-government controlled Ukrainian territory" under the regulations was expanded to include the areas of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts.
