Introduces State aid for investments in electricity storage capacities

01 Oct 2024

On 17 September 2024, the Ministry of Energy of Romania launched a State aid scheme to support investments in the development of electricity storage capacities. The scheme aims to finance the establishment of storage capacities connected to renewable energy sources, including hydroelectric power plants.

Eligible projects must be implemented within Romania, involve new behind-the-meter storage facilities, and absorb at least 75 per cent of their energy from connected renewable sources annually. Aid is capped at €100,000 per megawatt-hour (MWh) of installed storage, with a maximum funding limit of €10 million per enterprise. The total budget of €150 million is to be distributed to at least 15 beneficiaries through a competitive tendering process.

The scheme is valid until 31 December 2027, with grants provided as reimbursements for eligible expenses. Effective as of 1 October 2024, it aligns with Romania's National Energy and Climate Plan 2021–2030 and the European Green Deal.
