Launches National Data Centers Plan

05 Dec 2024

On 5 December 2024, the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation launched the Chilean National Data Centres Plan, aiming to position Chile as a leading digital infrastructure hub in Latin America and attract $2.5 billion in investment.

The Plan focuses on three objectives: 1) Boost industry growth by improving investment conditions through regulatory clarity and streamlined processes; 2) Develop a decentralised, sustainable data centre sector powered by renewable energy, reducing environmental impact; and 3) Advance research and development (R&D) to drive innovation in data technologies.

Key Measures: - Digital investment platform – A State-led tool integrating data on energy, land use, fibre optics and environmental factors to guide investment. - Regulatory guide – A public resource outlining permits and processes for data centre construction and operation. - Environmental criteria – Standardised technical guidelines to streamline environmental impact assessments. - Clean Production Agreement – A public-private initiative promoting energy efficiency, water sustainability and carbon footprint reduction. - Talent development – A strategy to strengthen technical skills in both the public and private sectors. - Regional technology campuses – AI-focused infrastructure in areas with strong connectivity and renewable energy. - Access to advanced computing – Facilitating collaboration across sectors for AI research and development.

As part of the Plan, the Ministry of Science and CORFO have launched a programme to enhance advanced computing infrastructure for AI model training and sector-specific technological solutions. The programme offers co-funding of up to $7 million per R&D project, covering up to 80 per cent of costs.
