Launches Battery Breakthrough Initiative to support and grow battery manufacturing

19 Aug 2025

On 19 August 2025, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), in collaboration with the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, officially launched the Battery Breakthrough Initiative (BBI) to support and expand domestic battery manufacturing, with total funding of A$500 million (approximately $523 million). The initiative targets three segments in which Australia has a competitive advantage but lacks sufficient manufacturing capacity:

  • Processing and production of active battery materials (cathodes, anodes and electrolytes), leveraging Australia’s lithium, nickel and graphite resources;
  • Establishment and expansion of facilities for manufacturing battery cells;
  • Development of capacity for assembling modules and packs for utility-scale batteries.

 Funding provided through BBI may include capital grants, production incentives or other payments deemed appropriate by ARENA for the project.
