Issued Directive to License Securities Exchange in Ethiopia

16 Jul 2024

On 16 July 2024, the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority issued the “Directive on Licensing, Operation, and Supervision of Securities Exchanges, Derivatives Exchanges, and the Over-The-Counter Market No. 1009/2024”. The Directive aims to facilitate the licensing of Ethiopia's first securities exchange. It outlines the documentation, terms, and requirements necessary to obtain a license for operating exchanges and over-the-counter markets. Additionally, it establishes a supervisory framework for these exchanges, detailing internal regulations, reporting obligations, and governance standards. Furthermore, it consolidates Ethiopia's previously fragmented securities trading landscape into a single, licensed, and regulated market. The Directive also paves the way for the Ethiopian Securities Exchange S.C. to commence operations by granting it an exchange license.
