Adopts €1.94 billion State aid scheme to support investments in battery production and green technology equipment

28 Nov 2023

On 11 May and 28 November 2023, the European Commission approved two State aid schemes by Spain, totalling €1.94 billion, to support investments in battery production and key green technology equipment under the Green Deal Industrial Plan. Both schemes fall within the Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework, which seeks to accelerate the green transition and reduce dependence on fossil fuels in strategic sectors. The €837 million scheme, approved in May, focuses on battery production for electric and connected vehicles, offering direct grants and loans to companies involved in the manufacture of batteries, essential components and raw materials. The €1.1 billion scheme, approved in November, supports investments in the production of key green technologies, including batteries, solar panels, wind turbines, heat pumps, electrolysers and related components or raw materials, through direct grants to eligible companies. Under both schemes, funding must be granted by 31 December 2025.
