Adopts a €680 million scheme to support the deployment of 5G networks in underserved rural areas

15 Jun 2023

On 15 June 2023, the European Commission approved a €680 million scheme by Spain to support the deployment of high-performance fifth-generation (5G) standalone networks in underserved rural areas. The scheme will finance the installation of equipment and infrastructure for 5G standalone networks in areas with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants, where no current or planned fourth-generation (4G) investment offers minimum download speeds of 50 megabits per second. Direct grants will be provided to electronic communications operators through competitive selection procedures, covering up to 90 per cent of eligible costs. Deployment is to be completed by February 2026. The initiative is aligned with Spain’s Digital Agenda 2025 and aims to bridge the digital divide by ensuring reliable, high-speed mobile connectivity in smaller municipalities.
