Provides State aid to support chemical recycling of plastic waster

05 Sep 2025

On 3 February 2025, the European Commission approved a €500 million State aid scheme to support the chemical recycling of certain types of plastic waste. The scheme is open to companies in all sectors and supports investment in chemical recycling technologies that can return mixed and/or contaminated plastics to a near-pristine state and the incorporation of such materials in production. It targets products such as trays, films, non-beverage bottles and textile materials with a certain polyester content. The aid takes the form of direct grants of up to 40 per cent of the cost difference between chemical recycling and less environmentally friendly alternatives. The scheme is in line with the European Union’s objective of achieving a circular economy.
