Launches direct-grant scheme to support large-scale energy storage investments

17 Mar 2025

On 17 March 2025, the European Commission approved a State aid scheme of Spain worth €700 million to support investment in energy storage facilities to foster the transition to a net-zero economy. The aid (partly financed by the European Regional Development Fund – ERDF) is provided as direct grants to support building new electricity storage capacity (targeted at approximately 1,800 MWh) and is open to all storage technologies, with aid to be granted no later than 31 December 2025. The scheme was approved under the Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework (TCTF). It provides investment aid for large-scale electricity storage to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports and increase integration of variable renewables.
