Joint Guiding Principles for Investment Policymaking presented at Special Session of the D-8 Commission Meeting

11 Aug 2020

During the Special Session of the D-8 Commission Meeting held under the chairmanship of Turkey, UNCTAD presented the key elements of the joint D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation - UNCTAD Guiding Principles for Investment Policymaking. Important agenda items regarding the forthcoming D-8 Summit Meeting were discussed.

In January 2020, countries members of the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation (Bangladesh, Egypt, Nigeria, Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Turkey) endorsed a set of Guiding Principles for Investment Policymaking jointly developed with UNCTAD.

The Principles provide guidance for investment policymaking with a view to:

  • promoting inclusive economic growth and sustainable development;
  • promoting coherence in national and international investment policymaking;
  • fostering an open, transparent and conducive global policy environment for investment; and
  • aligning investment promotion and facilitation policies with sustainable development goals.

A number of economies, economic groupings and regional organizations have adopted similar principles for investment policymaking to guide the development of national and international investment policies (see UNCTAD World Investment Report 2020).
