1,401 cases now available in the Investment Dispute Settlement Navigator
15 Apr 2025UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has updated its Investment Dispute Settlement Navigator, offering information on a total of 1,401 investor–State arbitration cases under investment treaties as of 31 December 2024.
As part of this update, UNCTAD has added new cases, arbitral decisions and arbitrator appointments compiled on the basis of public sources and specialized reporting services.
An analysis of trends in ISDS cases will be included in the forthcoming World Investment Report 2025, which will be made available later this year on unctad.org.
Key findings of this update
In 2024, claimants brought at least 58 publicly known investor-State dispute settlement (ISDS) cases pursuant to international investment agreements (IIAs).
As of 31 December 2024, the total number of known investment treaty arbitrations had reached 1,401.
To date, 135 countries and one economic grouping (the European Union) are known to have been respondents to one or more treaty-based ISDS claims.
Additional cases have surfaced for previous years and the numbers were adjusted accordingly. As some arbitrations can be kept fully confidential, the actual number of disputes filed in 2024 is also likely to be higher.
You can browse the ISDS Navigator to find information on the subject matter and the status of arbitral proceedings, awards and decisions issued by tribunals, breaches of IIA provisions alleged and found, amounts claimed and awarded, and arbitrators serving on the tribunal.
