Adopts €3 billion State aid scheme for the construction and operation of onshore wind and solar photovoltaic installations

26 Jul 2024

On 26 July 2024, the Government of Romania adopted a State Aid Scheme in the form of contracts for difference (CfD) for the production of electricity from renewable onshore wind and solar photovoltaic sources. This followed the European Commission's State aid authorization decision of 6 March 2024 to approve a €3 billion State aid scheme supporting the construction and operation of onshore wind and solar photovoltaic installations. The scheme provides assistance through competitive bidding procedures and employs a two-way CfD mechanism to ensure stable returns while preventing overcompensation. These projects will contribute to Romania’s renewable energy objectives and the European Union's transition to a net-zero economy under the Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework, thereby promoting energy independence and sustainability. The scheme has entered into force on 5 August and is scheduled to run until 31 December 2025.
