UN Trade and Development Rolls Out Most Significant Upgrade to IIA Content Mapping since 2017
01 Dec 2025
UN Trade and Development’s (UNCTAD) International Investment Agreements (IIA) section has released its largest upgrade to the UNCTAD IIA Content Mapping since 2017, marking a significant step forward in the monitoring and analysis of global investment treaty drafting.
More than 200 new international investment agreements mapped with new features available
The update includes the mapping of more than 200 new international investment agreements, bringing the total coverage to over 2,800 IIAs concluded up to 2025.
The enhanced dataset also introduces new mapping features, such as more detailed approaches to fair and equitable treatment and an expanded range of exclusions from the most-favoured-nation clause , offering deeper insight into the content of these provisions.
Expanded knowledge on broader economic agreements
With the new upgrade, the IIA Content Mapping now includes the content of all broad economic agreements containing investment protection provisions . The update reflects treaty practice through end-2024, allowing users to track the most recent developments in IIA drafting.
This release marks the first Mapping update produced entirely in-house, thanks to the sustained efforts of UNCTAD staff over the past year.
UN Trade and Development will continue to provide yearly updates , with the next edition – covering developments through 2025 – expected in the second quarter of 2026 .
The IIA Content Mapping update is part of UN Trade and Development’s ongoing mission to enhance transparency in the international investment regime, which also led to the launch earlier this year of the IIA Facilitation Mapping, seeking to help countries track and implement their facilitation commitments.
The IIA Content Mapping update was realized by the UNCTAD IIA Team. The mapping and upgrade were coordinated by Dafina Atanasova under the supervision of Hamed El Kady. The mapping of the treaties was done by Lucas Ricardo, Yihua Teng, Sophia Millaud, Riham Marii, Gracious Awayiwoe, Eleanor Thompson and Dafina Atanasova.
