International investment agreements database update: 44+ new treaties in 2025 and evolving drafting practices
21 Apr 2026UNCTAD has updated the IIA Navigator, the world’s most comprehensive free database of international investment agreements (IIA).
Key findings
- At least 44 new IIAs were signed in 2025, bringing the IIA universe to 3,369.
- In 2025, the majority of IIAs were concluded between developed and developing economies.
- Recent IIAs continued the trend towards increased inclusion of facilitation and cooperation commitments and further refinement of investment protection and investor-State dispute settlement content.
The latest update includes information on newly concluded IIAs, IIA entry into force, termination, renegotiation, amendments or side instruments, as well as newly mapped IIAs for which texts became available. This comprehensive annual update covers information for 2025.
UNCTAD data on IIA trends and evolving drafting practices support policymakers and stakeholders’ understanding of an increasingly complex IIA regime and play a key role in informing ongoing efforts to reform and modernize it for sustainable development.
A detailed analysis of recent IIA trends will be presented in the World Investment Report 2026, to be published later this year on unctad.org.
